Another Historic Saloon coaching day – this time at Silverstone – was an excellent wet weather challenge going into their winter break. Using a combination of Lotus Cortina, Mustang and Euge’s 2-seater MX5 the drivers, who had previously lacked confidence in the wet, were slithering around like a block of lard in a frying pan by the end of the day. Euge is a renowned ‘Rain Meister’; one of the reasons being his in depth understanding and knowledge of optimal ‘wet lines’ – and it was great to have a full wet day to pass on that detailed information.
Multiple race winner Mike Whitaker has just had his race entries accepted for him to contest the prestigious Goodwood Members Meeting in March .. only problem is he’s never driven there before! So a track day in the dual-steer MX5 in November has laid the ground work and this will be followed up by another Goodwood coaching day in February.
A corporate group day for Neil Walker and five guests again at Silverstone in December proved to be a great success. Three MX5s were commissioned, along with Eugene plus two additional hand-picked instructors Bradley Philpot and Anthony Dunn. The guests – several of whom had never driven on any race track before – had a fantastic day, certainly one they will never forget. Resident photographer Chris Searle was on hand to do the pictures (thanks again Chris). Feedback about the day was brilliant so thanks to all concerned!!
Most of you will know that Eugene designed the Blyton Park race track in 2011, the various layouts proving so popular that the circuit was operational for over 300 days in 2015! What you won’t know is that he has recently been brought in as track design consultant on another exciting new racing circuit. All we can say at the moment is that it’s ‘somewhere in Europe’; the project is in its very early stages with many red tape hurdles to overcome. Watch this space for details in the coming months.
Other non-coaching activity for Eugene included a track day with friend and GPS-log designer Martin Roberts. The pair are developing a precision ‘cm-accurate’ version of the system which uses a GPS base station to continuously send out corrections (via radio) to the GPS unit on the car itself. The tests proved very encouraging and with more development, Euge hopes to use it to help clients on selected dates in 2016.
Euge is looking forward to more coaching challenges in 2016 – his mission is to help you become a better, quicker and more competent driver, and work with you in optimising your car. You can get in touch with him either mobile 0775 383 5629 or simply by visiting the website www.eugeneobrien.co.uk
Here’s wishing all clients old and new a wonderful Christmas & Happy 2016!!
